Railways operated by Gloucester Stone

On the site now occupied by Barnwood Builders, at the edge of Hucclecote on the Barnwood Road, there was an extensive concrete works and gravel pit, with an internal railway system. This had closed by 1966.

There were two petrol-engined locomotives used on a 1'11½" gauge line, both from Listers of Dursley - works numbers 5130 (new in 1933) and 21011 (new in 1943). It's not known if the newer loco was a replacement for the older one, or if both shared the work. Both locomotives have now vanished from history, along with the works.

The track layout was quite different on the 1955 map - however detail is not clear enough to reproduce here.

The second line is known only from the 1936 OS map, which show a tramway running from what are named the "Lilliesfield Gravel Pits" to North Upton Lane. "Citizen" adverts for 1933 were placed by Gloucester Stone selling gravel from North Upton Lane, so presumably the tramway was used to get gravel to a sales yard. The tramway was removed before the 1955 OS map was surveyed, but its course can be clearly seen in the alleyway that joins Anbrook Crescent to Upton Lane.
